In which I DO mind the PQs
I'm amazed about this in retrospect, but nevertheless it is only now,
after almost a year living in New York, that I have finally had a
Terrible Waiter Experience in a restaurant.
So, Saturday SM and I had to go into the city for different reasons: I wanted to go pick up some library books that were on hold for me (new Temeraire book, YAY), and SM needed to go to the Apple store to buy a new AC cord for her laptop, as hers had died.
SM, however, loathes going to the Apple stores in Manhattan, because (a) they are all designed with translucent stairs and walls and floors, which is meant to be all funky and hip and shit, but also is kind of terrifying for the vertigo-prone, and (b) they are inevitably stuffed to the GILLS with people. Mostly tourists. Seriously, if you want to see a prime example of what I can only call a veritable orgy of consumerism, head on down to the Apple store on 5th and 59th. IF YOU DARE.
SM, let us say, is really, really not down with large crowds of people shoving her around inside, essentially, a giant glass box of crazy. Accordingly, she asked me to come with her as moral (and possibly bouncerial) support, and in return she would let me haul her to the two different library branches I needed to go to to pick up the books I had on hold (for reasons too boring to explain).
She also very wisely elected to go to the much less obnoxious Apple store in the Meatpacking District instead of the Giant Glass Box of Crazy on 5th. This was cool for me, in that I had sort of brushed by the Meatpacking District before but not really been in it, as such, before. At least I don't think I had. Anyway.
So, we went to the Apple store on 14th, which was still stupid crowded but not nearly as bad as the 5th Avenue store would have been, and got in and out with skin and psyches intact, and went across the street to have lunch at the Diner.
No, this is not where I had the bad waiter experience. Our waiter there was perfectly adequate, and the food was WAY better than adequate. I had this chicken burger with aioli and avocado and provolone that was KICKASS, y'all, and SM convinced the guys there to make her a chocolate and peanut butter milkshake even though it wasn't on the menu, and while that is definitely not my thing, SM was Pleased.
Afterwards we debated simply going back to Queens, but the weather that day was absolutely gorgeous, and it was a shame to just go home, you know? So we decided to walk down to the Hudson River Park only a few blocks away.
It was pretty darn lovely, I must say. There was some kind of festival/outdoor concert thingy going on on the big pier (Flogging Molly was one of the musical guests), but unfortunately the entrance fee proved to be a whopping 70 bucks, which, no. SM and I walked on, down to the next pier which had a playground surrounded by a promenade with benches where you could sit and enjoy the New Jersey skyline across the river. I was surprised to find that the New Jersey skyline? Not too shabby.
The cool breeze and the sunlight glinting off the water and the distant proud outline of the Statue of Liberty helped with that, of course.
SM showed me where, had they been there, the World Trade Center towers would have, well, towered on the jutting lower bit of the city behind us, outlining them with her fingers against empty sky.
We lingered for a bit, then just sort of wandered up and around a ways until we found ourselves back in the Village. Since we were in SM's friend's (whom we shall call Red Dutchess) neck of the woods, we called her up to see if she wanted to meet us for coffee. RD did indeed, and so we wound up at a place called Alexandra's on Hudson Street.
Well.
If you have been waiting for the length of this entry with bated breath for the Terrible Waiter Experience, look no further, for here it is.
We walked up just as the waiter, who for the duration shall be known as Pissy Queen, was walking out to swipe the silverware off the tables on the outdoor patio. SM was on the phone with RD, telling her where we were so she could meet us, so I smiled and said to Pissy Queen, "Is it okay if we sit outside?"
Now, there are two kinds of "is it okay" questions.
First there is the kind where you are genuinely asking if something is cool to do, like "Is it okay if I eat your last slice of pie?", because it may not be, and you know that, and if the person says that no, it's not okay, you're cool with that, because you totally understand that the person may want their last slice of pie, and life goes on.
The second kind, however, is the kind where, in a sane world, the thing you're asking is going to be okay, and no one in the world would reasonably deny the request, and you're only asking because asking is more polite than assuming or demanding. Like, "Is it okay if I use your bathroom?" at a friend's house, because your friend is totally going to say Yes, right?
Assuming the bathroom hasn't exploded or anything, of course. But you get my point; the second kind is a courtesy, rather than a genuine inquiry.
So, too, "Is it okay if we sit outside?", when the restaurant to whose employee you are putting the question (a) clearly features outdoor tables which are (b) currently completely unoccupied. This, without doubt, is a Courtesy Is It Okay.
At least I thought it was. Evidently, though, someone did not get the memo to Pissy Queen.
Pissy Queen swiveled, slowly, to face me, and gave me the most blatant, sneering once-over I have ever personally been the target of (and I say this having lived for eight years in L.A.), and snapped, "No."
Mm.
First I checked to make sure that I hadn't accidentally eaten a puppy in front of him, or shat on his patio without noticing, or something similarly stupendously awful enough to possibly justify this kind of behavior, but swiftly concluded that no, I had in fact just been standing there like a human, so I moved on to trying to remember if anyone else had ever managed to piss me off this thoroughly with a single syllable.
I'm guessing this showed to some extent (okay, maybe a lot of extent) on my face, because Pissy Queen then clarified, "We're closing."
SM, who having been on the phone was not really aware - yet - of the Pissy, told RD to hang on and said to Pissy Queen, "Oh! You're closed? Okay, then - " and she started to tell RD on the phone that no, we're not meeting at Alexandra's, at which point Pissy Queen interrupted to further clarify, "We're reopening at 5:30."
SM checked her watch, and blinked at Pissy Queen. I pulled out my cell, and confirmed the time: 5:20.
Uh-huh.
"So," SM said, slowly, "Is it okay if we just sit out here till you reopen? We're waiting for our friend anyway."
Pissy Queen didn't quite roll his eyes, but it was a near thing. "Sure, whatever," he said, and went back inside.
SM and I exchanged a look of Oh-KAY then!, and she finished telling RD where the place was and hung up as we sat at one of the tables. I inquired as to why it was that we were actually staying here, after that performance, and SM shrugged and opined that Whatever. I grunted and pulled out my book, and SM pulled out her magazine.
Ten minutes later, Dutchess arrived, and we settled in for a nice round of Catch-up. After about another ten minutes, RD looked around and said, "I'm really thirsty; did you guys already order?"
SM and I looked at each other and laughed, and we regaled RD with our Waiter Adventures thus far.
"Aw, he probably just had a big fight with his boyfriend," RD said sympathetically, having not yet been actually subjected to the Pissy. SM was dubious, since in her opinion he had seemed to take a dislike to me personally; her theory was that I reminded him of someone he hated. My personal theory, of course, was that he was a big giant pissy queen, and either way there was no excuse for getting his bitter all up in my Kool-Aid.
I craned my neck to peer into the large picture window beside us, to see Pissy Queen sitting at one of the tables (!) inside, ignoring us entirely - even though according to his cockamamie "schedule", they had been "reopen" for at least ten minutes - and we were the only customers in the place.
Oh, this just kept getting better.
SM put on her "fake cheerful" face and waved merrily and hugely and completely unmissably in the window, so that even Pissy Queen couldn't pretend he hadn't noticed, and made gestures indicating "Hi, ready to order now!"
I swear, Pissy Queen actually heaved a sigh as he hauled his pissy ass upright, to take the whole ten steps outside and, o woe, actually do his job.
It's times like these, I thought, that it's a shame I don't actually have Tourette's, or some other condition that would medically excuse my going apeshit all over this bitch. Because that would be awesome.
But, I am sadly sane, and thus had to settle for ordering a coffee in the most offensively dismissive way I could manage. Which, I am only sort of proud to say, can be pretty damn offensive when I put my mind to it.
Dutchess ordered a glass of Pellegrino, and SM asked for a glass of chardonnay, at which point Pissy Queen snottily requested her to choose from the "wines we have available", because WHO has CHARDONNAY, my GOD, and pointed at the list of wines by the glass, which was on a chunk of chalkboard resting in the... wire basket of a bicycle propped against the tree in front of the restaurant.
What?
Yeah, 'cause that's... classy.
SM peered at this in astonishment, and then said, "I'll have a glass of pinot..." And she hesitated, because the bike basket (!) was rather far away and the chalkboard hard to read, but of course Pissy Queen assumed she was an unlettered wine barbarian and finished "...Gris?" in a such a tone that he might as well have said, "Giant Moron?"
SM somehow refrained from braining him with the goddamn bike basket and merely agreed, while RD's eyebrows tried to climb off her forehead and I contemplated honing my fork-ninja skills.
Later, Pissy Queen tried to make like RD had ordered an entire bottle of Pellegrino even though she had very specifically said otherwise, and had to be grumpily persuaded to take it off the tab, and then, in a capper that I am CONVINCED he made up just to fuck with us, claimed that the only credit card the restaurant accepted was American Express.
Because, okay, seriously? No.
That's fucking retarded, is what that is. You accept AmEx, but not Mastercard or Visa? Even though the reason that 95% of the time it's the other way around is because AmEx charges half again as much percentage, FROM THE BUSINESS receiving the money, than either Mastercard or Visa? Really, what?
Sweet minty-fresh Jesus, y'all.
Fortunately we had enough cash on us that we could duck that fight, so we paid and got the hell out of Dodge. We left a 10% tip, which if you ask me was WAY generous, and vowed to never ever go there again.
Oh, and also, their bathroom was vile.
So, definitely in current 1st place for "worst New York restaurant experience". AND NOW YOU KNOW!
But other than that the weekend was lovely. No, really, it was.
The End!
P.S. #2 on my quiz was Hocus Pocus. Now, dance! Dance until you DIE!

| "Giant glass box of crazy" You have succinctly and perfectly described who I feel about the Michigan Avenue Apple Store! Which I am sure is not as crazy as the one in NY ('cause everything is crazier in NY, right?) but is definitely a big glass box full of too many people. |
2008-08-18 09:01 pm UTC (link)
| It's
entirely possible that they only take AmEx though the odds are against
it - their merchant fees are the highest in the industry, and it's
actually more likely that a restaurant does NOT take AmEx. Honestly, I would not have left the bitch one thin dime. He might have gotten and penny and and a note explaining exactly how much retraining he needs in order to be considered to at least be making an effort at his job, but there's not a chance in hell he would have gotten more than that. I'm thoroughly sympathetic to servers stuck in a bad sitch - new, restaurant is slammed and they're the only one on the floor, cook didn't show up on time, boiler blew up, any number of things - but deliberate rudeness will only get you the finger. And possibly a complaint to the manager. |
2008-08-18 09:05 pm UTC (link)
| If ever there was a justification for the negative tipping situation, this guy was the epitome of it. (My niece's friend is a big fan of "negative tipping". You leave 5 or 10 cents less than the bill, not enough that the owner would get upset about, but enough that the waiter knows exactly how much contempt you have for him.) |
2008-08-19 01:10 am UTC (link)
| "If ever there was a justification for the negative tipping situation, this guy was the epitome of it." what would that be? "umm, Excuse me Mary, but your service so abominable, we feel that you each of us three dollars? |
2008-08-19 01:21 am UTC (link)
| Just short-pay. I do it all the time, because they always try to charge me the SO-CALLED and UNCONSTITUTIONAL "$ale$ tax", and I will not pay that. |
2008-08-18 09:06 pm UTC (link)
| You tipped *at all*? I'd have insisted on exact change, demanded to speak to the manager, and registered a complaint with the owner before leaving and being much louder than you about where it was and the name and website. Actually, strike that, I'd have spoken to the manager after the initial 20 minute fiasco, then left and taken my money elsewhere. I'm surprised you put up with that. Seriously. That kind of "service" is unforgivable. |
2008-08-18 09:58 pm UTC (link)
| Honestly
I think we just didn't feel like it was worth it. Dutchess only had
thirty minutes to hang with us because she had a meeting to get to, and
really, after my initial pissed-offedness it just started being funny.
Like, we were all, WHAT will he do next? And then, he really was just this bitter pissy queen who works for shit money in a bistro. He wasn't worth the ten minutes out of my day it would have taken to screw up his life. |
2008-08-18 10:04 pm UTC (link)
| I still wouldn't have left *any* tip. |
2008-08-18 10:07 pm UTC (link)
| We left him the change, which worked out to a 10% tip. This had the benefit of cutting down by one the number of times we had to interact with him. I figure it was worth it. |

| Sloth beats wrath every time, I say. |
2008-08-19 12:34 am UTC (link)
| Amen, I said amen! |
2008-08-19 01:19 am UTC (link)
| I want this on a t-shirt or commemorative plaque. |
2008-08-18 11:18 pm UTC (link)
| I
had a similar experience myself, and in that case I left two pennies on
the table as a tip. Leaving nothing might be mistaken for forgetfulness
or some crazy moral objection to tipping; saying that the lousy service
was worth only two cents to me, however, is less ambiguous. -- Steve usually tips generously, but not if the server was a jerk. PS: I know this kinda messes things up for the kitchen staff if they get a cut, but sadly I can't leave a tip just for them. |
2008-08-18 11:21 pm UTC (link)
| The kitchen staff will figure it out fast enough. (There's also the classic method of leaving a single penny underneath an *upturned* full water glass. I've always liked that one in principle, but never had bad enough service to ever even consider doing it.) |
2008-08-19 01:03 am UTC (link)
| Being
able to leave such a tip would imply good-enough service that you had a
full glass of water on your table. That alone takes the service out of unterseepfennigland, in my opinion. -- Steve reserves low tips for such service as, "salad warmer than the entree", or "been waiting for the cheque for half an hour", or similar discourtesies. |
2008-08-18 11:38 pm UTC (link)
| or shat on his patio without noticing, This happens with you, does it? |
2008-08-19 12:27 am UTC (link)
| Um, so, about the last time I was at your apartment... |
2008-08-19 01:09 am UTC (link)
| Oh, thank god! I thought that was mine! |
2008-08-19 01:15 am UTC (link)
| So glad I did not read this exchange at work.... |
2008-08-19 01:06 am UTC (link)
| Errr.... anyone recall me regaling them with this lovely little sojurn in the SoHo Apple store? Grrrrr.... |
2008-08-19 05:01 am UTC (link)
| I do! |
2008-08-19 05:04 am UTC (link)
| First
I checked to make sure that I hadn't accidentally eaten a puppy in
front of him, or shat on his patio without noticing, or something I started barking with laughter so loudly at this point, that Jeff came running to see what was going on. And then I made him back up and read from the beginning. Bwahahaha. My temper usually gets the best of me in these situations (beating out sloth) but when in circumstances like limited time, I would have probably done the same thing. |

I'd have insisted on exact change, demanded to speak to the manager, and registered a complaint with the owner before leaving and being much louder than you about where it was and the name and website. That kind of "service" is unforgivable. |

I think we just didn't feel like it was worth it. Dutchess only had
thirty minutes to hang with us because she had a meeting to get to, and
really, after my initial pissed-offedness it just started being funny.

| Being
able to leave such a tip would imply good-enough service that you had a
full glass of water on your table. That alone takes the service out of unterseepfennigland, in my opinion. -- Steve reserves low tips for such service as, "salad warmer than the entree", or "been waiting for the cheque for half an hour", or similar discourtesies. |

2008-08-18 11:09 pm UTC (link)

Understanding Dreams: Dream Meanings and Interpretation
Dream Interpretation and Analysis requires a profound understanding of the topic. Several dream meanings have been identified and these have to be personalized by the dreamer.
Understanding Dreams: Dream Meanings and Interpretation
Common dreams and the possible interpretations are as follows -
* Test Dreams - anxious and perturbed feelings, lack of confidence, others are judging.
* Flying Dreams - a strong mind and will, being afraid of challenges and success, being on the top of a situation.
* Chase Dreams - fear of being attacked, presence of self-destructive actions, method of handling stresses and fears.
* Naked Dreams - inability to conceal something, fear of being disgraced, being caught unaware, desire to get noticed.
* Teeth Dreams - anxiety regarding appearance, fear of being abashed, sense of powerlessness, lack of self-confidence.
* Falling Dreams - presence of insecurity and instability, feeling of failure or inferiority, yielding to a sexual urge.
Dream Meanings
Depending upon the physical characteristics, sexual outlook and native desires, animals are seen in dreams. The dream meaning can be deduced by considering the wild and uncivilized side of the personality of an individual. Flying or chirping birds symbolize happiness, love, balance and a sunny perspective towards life. Presence of body parts in dreams depend upon the dream ego and the conscious identity. Sometimes the dream may forebode any health problems of the specific part. When ants are seen in a dream, the meaning is that there is a feeling of being neglected as well as unimportant and a gross discontent in the daily routine. If there is an unterminated communication with somebody, characters appear in the dream till the issue is finalized. The presence of different foods in a dream can be connected with new beliefs and ideas that one imbibes and digests mentally.
Dream Interpretation
Dream Interpretation was explained by Sigmund Freud as the basis of fulfillment of desires. Calvin S. Hall proposed a theory of dreams In 1954, according to which, dreaming is considered to be a cognitive process. Hall stated that the dream images were simply visual symbols of personal views. According to Hobson and Solm, dreams are a type of psychosis. They are either a delirium or schizophrenia. For interpreting dreams, the use of any dream dictionary is not recommended. The dreamer should ponder upon the following topics, so that the import is revealed.
* the actions in the dream
* the prominent symbols and relation between these
* the issues, combats and situations
* the connection of one dream with past dreams
* how the dreamer acts in the dream
* the opponents and supporters in the dream
* part of the dream, the dreamer would like to avoid
* what does the dream demand from the dreamer
* why did the dreamer have the particular dream
When all such information is collected and arranged, it is quite possible to interpret it correctly.
Dream Analysis
The first step in Dream Analysis is to write down the dream. Then, disregard the petty details and recognize the main theme of the dream. This can be attained by pure commonsense. The names, places, things are to be neglected and the emphasis should be only on the action in the dream. It must be kept in mind that a majority of dreams are not prophetic and are pertaining to the dreamer. Now that the theme is found out, the part of the life it applies to must be thought of. The emotional state during the dream plays an important role. If many parts of the life fit in the theme, the emotions assist in detecting the correct part of the life. Further, the details of the dream are taken into consideration. Here it is worthwhile to consider the symbols in the dream. Symbols must be taken personally. Every dreamer associates symbols with different things. So, generalized definitions would not help as they furnish a common meaning and not a personal one. All these issues have to be kept in mind in Dream Analysis.
In a nutshell, understanding dreams is a very complex topic and requires considerable application and experience to deal with it successfully.

Dream Interpretation - A Tool for Life Improvement
Knowing what causes your dreams - and what they mean - can provide insights that will help you in achieving success and happiness in your life!
Can your Dreams Help you Succeed in Life?
Dreams are something that we all experience - even if we don't remember them. But are they really significant in the real world? Many people do believe that the ability to remember and interpret your dreams can help you solve problems in the waking world, confront and conquer repressed feelings and issues that you avoid or are afraid to deal with in the waking world, and can to put your best foot forward.
Throughout the years, dreams have played a significant role in the lives of many people. Military, political, and spiritual decisions have been made because of a dream. In some tribes, the crossover from childhood to manhood includes retreating into the mountains to commune with the spirit world through dreams. The dreams are believed to reveal to the young man what his mission in this life will be - the path that he should take for his journey through his life on earth.
Dreams are the brain's way of sorting all of the information taken in during your waking hours. Even though there are constant noises going on in the background, the brain only is alert to the most important events - everything else is stored away to be dealt with at a later time - and that occurs in our dreams.
Dreams offer you a chance to take a close look at yourself and see what you are really made of - what your true desires are. Dreams can also provide you with a means to face the things that you do not like about yourself and learn to alter these aspects of your personality into something that is positive and more productive in your waking life.
Some people base all of their personal, business, and social decisions on the meaning of their dreams. They learn to manipulate their dreams in order to focus on upcoming events that could change their lives.
Sigmund Freud, one of the greatest minds of the 19th century, revolutionized he study of dreams. He called dreams the "royal road to the unconscious". Freud's initial assessment of dreams was that all dreams were of a sexual nature. While he later gave up that theory, he clung to the theory that dreams are a wish fulfillment - a way for our conscious minds to become aware of the fears and desires buried in our unconscious minds.
Carl Jung studied under Freud. His views on dreams greatly contrasted those of Freud - to the point that they parted company and went their separate ways in their studies of dreams. Jung believed that dreams were more spiritual in nature. Like Freud, Jung believed that dreams were a "window to our unconscious" - a way of communicating and acquainting ourselves with the unconscious. Through our dreams, we can learn to understand our true feelings and find solutions to problems we are facing in our waking life. Jung believed that our dreams "serve to guide the waking self to achieve wholeness" - a unity of body, spirit, and mind.
Your dreams can help you reach a desired unity of body, spirit, and mind by revealing to you the path in life that will lead to happiness. Many times we may take a job because the pay is good, the benefits are good, and the "social status" we are searching for are a result of this job. But, if the job does not make us happy - if the job is not the career that we truly desire - are we denying ourselves the satisfaction that comes from feeling successful? Often, the answer is yes.
Being successful means different things to different people. But to most people, being successful means that we are achieving our goals in a personal, professional, and social aspect. Your dreams can actually help you to attain success. Dreams allow you to learn to understand your true desires and equipped with this understanding, you can begin reaching for your goals. Dreams can help you face aspects of your personality that you may not like - and once you have faced them, you have the power to allow the best you to shine through.
Throughout the history of man, even during Biblical times, dreams have played a significant role. God often appeared in the dreams of His people. Many people have been warned of medical problems in their dreams - and sometimes were able to make changes that helped them avoid the medical problem. Dreams are way to create a unity in mind, body, and spirit - thus creating a way for us to achieve success in our lives. Dreams are one of the free resources available to aid us in choosing the path in life that will fulfill all of our desires.

j.TYPES of Dreams
Different types of Dreams
We are about to venture into an area which is blurred, thereby categorizing it would also be difficult but then on the basis of frequency and validity of dreams we would classify them into some categories and get to know the different types of dreams.
Different types of Dreams
"The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind."-Sigmund Freud
Many experts are of the opinion that dreams are an outlet for our pent up emotions to come out of the dark unconscious and show up in the semi conscious state. Some are also of the view that dreams are just visible manifestations of what we imagine and think about the whole day. Now with all the varying opinions in mind today what we will discuss is the different types of dreams. The area that we have ventured into is blurred, thereby categorizing it would also be difficult but then on the basis of frequency and validity of dreams we would classify them into some categories. This list of classification would not be an exhaustive list since one can claim to differ and come up with a new category, which can also be right because the topic is subjective.
Types of Dreams
There are various dreams and we will try and categorize the dreams on the basis of frequency and content.
Repetitive/ recurring Dreams
In this category of dreams keep on repeating themselves more than once and this is not something that is peculiar to some people, it happens with many of us and it can be categorized onto a subsection called "Message bearing dreams". If one particular dream has been repeating it self from a very young age then probably there is a message hidden in it that you have understand or an aspect of your personality that you are scared to face and are therefore pushing it towards the unconscious. In these kind of cases with the help of a Psychoanalyst you can solve the problem and at times when these are also related to aspects of our personality, after a session with a psychoanalyst people come out as confident individuals with the ability to handle crises.
Message/ Psychic Dreams
Message dreams always are like stories that have something to unravel and reveal and the revelation is done with the help of colors, texture and detailing. It is done so that the subconscious can convey the message to the conscious and it can be worked upon. Experts say that Message dreams are a way to have a peep into the pool of wisdom that every human being is born with. Most of the times we fail to get the message and that is the reason these dreams repeat themselves. Some experts are of the opinion that the unconscious knows that the symbolism that it uses has to be repeated so that the conscious mind can understand it. Therefore some message or psychic dreams are recurrent. Message dreams would always have a particular thing highlighted or emphasized upon. Psychic dreams particularly have a warning or it can also be termed as a process of preparing the mind to face something shocking. People who have a psychic dream wake up restless but they seldom remember the dream as the conscious as usual for the sanity of the mind denies the situation.
Predictive/ Telepathic Dreams
Predictive dreams are the most sensitive of all since it is very difficult to determine the dream that you should take as a warning or foreseeing and the dream that you should plainly dismiss considering it to be a representation of your fear and anxiety. Many are of the opinion that Predictive dreams are a way of information extraction form the brain since we all have a collective base of information and we can derive information from the source if we have enough mental strength which is very rarely found in some people. Have you ever felt that you have already seen the things that are happening then, right at that moment, in fact you have also seen the shirt that the person in front of you is wearing. When these dreams show you banal commonalities there is nothing to worry about but when they show you bigger things that can harm the whole community then that might be something prophetic about it. Telepathic Dreams are also not very uncommon and the best example of a telepathic dream is the vision of the death of a dear one and it happens in the same way. At times people fail to see the faces of people in the dreams that according to me is probably because mind does not have strength enough to face it.
Lucid Dream
These are the dreams over which we can have control since most of the time we see such dreams when we are conscious enough to understand that we are dreaming so Lucid dreams can be used to get the solution of a problem or face a fear that you have or just to have fun. Since the nature of Lucid Dreams is to show something bizarre most of the people when they realize that they are dreaming are astonished into wakefulness, which consequently ends their dream.
Nightmares
These are most negative kind if dreams that leave you weak and frightened. The best way to deal with nightmares is to face them and try to know the reason you are experiencing them. It might be because you have given in to some fear of yours, which is taking a larger shape with days. Most of the time nightmares are result of repressed emotions of childhood. Some people experience nightmares due to some repressed event, which is a scar on their mind, but they feel ashamed to discuss about it. Many abused children are diagnosed when they started experiencing nightmares.
So these are some of categories in which dreams can be classified into, there are many other classifications as well like Release Dreams, Astral Dreams, Aspirational Dreams and others which reflect the various other purposes and contents of the dream.

i. Hopes & Dreams: A Critical Ingredient In The Lives Of Caregivers And Their Loved Ones
It’s human nature to hang onto two basic hopes – the hope of overcoming illness and the hope of delaying death. Hope is the magical salve for the suffering of caregivers and their loved ones. No matter how desperate the situation, there is still hope for the dream.
Hopes & Dreams: A Critical Ingredient In The Lives Of Caregivers And Their Loved Ones
It’s human nature to hang onto two basic hopes – the hope of overcoming illness and the hope of delaying death. However, in many cases the reality is that your loved one faces a steady medical decline, a life-threatening illness or impending death.
Hope is like the vase that contains your sweet-smelling colorful dreams. Dreams, like flowers, change over the seasons of life and the stages of caregiving. Yet, no matter how desperate the situation, there is always room for hope and dreams. It is the magical salve for the suffering of caregivers and their loved ones.
Hope is the optimistic belief that you can expect a better tomorrow.
Sometimes that better tomorrow happens as a result of something that changes in the outside world – such as a new drug or unexpected help. Sometimes the better tomorrow arrives because you see things from a new perspective. Hopes and dreams become the guiding light for the tough choices that you and your loved ones face.
Here are 7 tips for hanging onto hope:
1. Give a voice to your secret longings, wishes and dreams.
If you had a magic wand, what would you wish for? Maybe it’s turning back the sands of time and taking away the car keys from your father instead of sitting at his hospital bedside where he is recovering from the car accident he caused. Maybe it’s imagining that you’ll turn on the news and learn of a new miracle cure for the cancer that’s taking over your mother’s body or for the dementia that’s erasing your grandmother’s memories. Hope might be something simple like a good night’s sleep for you and your loved one. Say it out loud, "We could use a good night’s sleep."
2. Define the reality.
In the course of taking care of tens of thousands of patients, I’ve seen miracles happen. However, most people experience likely events. Grasp an understanding of your current reality based on what’s most likely to happen naturally.
When you define the most likely outcome, it helps you decide where to place your hopes. For example, a friend of mine who is a family doctor told me of a conversation between him and a loving mother whose 6-year-old child had a relapse of leukemia after a bone marrow transplant. There was an experimental treatment offered halfway across the country. The mother wanted to know where to take her child: to a new hospital across the country for lots of "pokeys" as her son called them, or Disneyland to enjoy the final days of his life. Does she hope for a cure, or for the fullest remaining days of her child’s life?
3. Recognize your loved one’s hopes may be different than your own.
The mother of the 6-year-old made the medical choices for her son. What if the person with the leukemia is your father, who is competent to make his own medical choices? Maybe you cannot bear the thought of losing him and hope that a new treatment will cure him. Maybe your father shares that perspective. However, what if he considers experimental treatment with certain discomfort and an uncertain benefit and decides he would rather live out his days enjoying his grandchildren?
You may find it difficult to support him. You do not want to burden your loved onea with your disappointment that he has placed hope in a different place than you would if you were in his shoes. That’s when you turn to a trusted friend and say, "I wish Dad would make a different choice. I want him to fight. I’m sad and angry that he’s chosen death."
4. Honor your loved one’s hopes.
As a caregiver, it’s important to understand that your loved one is the patient. It’s his or her body and life. As much as you think you know what the best choice is, your job is to help your loved ones realize their hopes.
5. Mourn the loss of the old dream.
Gretta said, "Mom had always hoped to live all of her days in her home filled with the memories of Dad and small children and happy holidays...and not so happy holidays. It just wasn’t safe any more. We moved her to a terrific retirement community that has everything she wants, including a beautiful garden. Still, she’s sad because it’s not what she had always imagined."
You too could have a dream of a healthy and independent loved one that’s hard to let go of. The loss of a dream can be as painful as the loss of a loved one. Mourning the loss of a dream brings healing.
6. Create a new dream.
You can still have hopes and dreams! They’re just different. Maybe the hope for cure is replaced with the hope for days or hours or moments free of pain. Maybe it’s the dream that your fragmented family will come together and heal old wounds around the deathbed.
State your dreams as attaining something you want rather than avoiding something you don’t want. As medical conditions change, it’s important that you and your loved one revisit the dream. If you’re disappointed about the course of events, ask, "Is this the loss of a dream, or a hope I can fulfill?"
7. Focus on your loved one.
Always remember, caregiving is first and foremost about supporting the person you love. Yes, you as a caregiver have hopes and dreams. Maybe the heart of caregiving is the willingness to fulfill the hopes and dreams – the vase filled with brilliant blooms – of those for whom you care – whether or not you hold the same vision.
Follow these tips, and you will be sure to hold onto your hopes and dreams. Remember, no matter how desperate the situation, there is still hope for the dream. The dream will change as the condition of your loved one change. Just like there’s always a flower to put in a vase -- there’s always hope.

h. Dream to Finish
Wish To Dream To The Finish?
We want to dream to the finish with some dreams. We scare our- selves awake with others.
I dreamed last night that Conan Obrien was in a real to life overly wide bottomed plane. I was directly under this plane. It looked like a giant flying boat. Conan circled me over and over, going lower and lower.
I sensed inside that I might die body-wise. I figured why me, and not the drummer, he called friend. Friends that go together, don't have to feel the sorrow, of the miss. Why would anyone want to fly in what looked to be the largest plane I've ever seen alone?
Comedians are eccentric they say though. I've never flown, except in my dreams. I hold my hands straight out, and fly better than my child-like imagination can do me. I fly this way several times a year, without fear. I don't spin in circles no more though.
Thanksgiving meal, cured me of that. I wanted to throw-up in this Conan plane dream. You'd think I'd die not being able to throw up and all, when dreaming.
I pray if your dream will kill you for real, that I can figure out a way to dream it, before you do! I guess going in ones sleep though, may be the best way, so I'll leave this in God's hands.
You can stomach things like God, when dreaming! I wish Elvis had my dream stomach. He could sing better than I can dream, even when he was sick.
He deserves his title! I hope to dream up a free Elvis concert. The Impossible Dream, I'd settle to hear alone, for a real dream of a dream! Can't get enough of Elvis least dreaming!
Instead of buying D.V.D.'s you could figure out why you dream, and tune in at will. This would be better than the computer chip! We may have to live with eating food that pregnant women do, to dream as men now.
I know I had made such a chocolaty dish, that I added some peptobismith, for the early cure. Maybe that's how you channel in to the dream state longer. Don't do this at home kids!
I've dreamed so many dreams, where I should have died. Maybe for real some dreams do kill people as they sleep, both ways. Could a dream give you a heart attack! If you didn't have that dream would you live another 50 years or more? What else are our dreams doing?
When people dream more than not, on any given day, does this enhance or effect real life later events to have greater impact? Do people dream more during full-moon, as the water in their bodies, is effected the same way ocean waves are?
Your blessed if you can Rambo it out, and survive no matter how bad your dreams get. None of mine are night-mares now. I've dreamed to many and never die.
I use to be scared silly, when a kid. I'd wake up in my dream, and was still in the dream world, and didn't know it. I'd look under the bed, still dreaming, for this beast.
I kept looking up, and heard people shouting, but couldn't see them. They shouted, "He doesn't know how to land! He circle over me about 10 times. I would have gone deaf, but sound was separated. What was suppose to blow out you hearing wasn't heard.
Dreams have a way of adding to life, in ways we don't understand. They're free, and make you feel free. I need to tell you that no matter what I dream, I never get killed. This one I thought I would finally loose my life in.
It wouldn't be so bad, getting knocked-off by a comedian. Beats having Rambo after me, thinking I'm the enemy. You can have that dream!
The dream before this one. I walked along a dirt trail with bike in hand. A friend from ten years past, walked beside me. It was as if we never knew the years between our last meet.
Normal conversation, and the normal run of the mill day. Then all at once, some real strange ones ventured by. There wasn't any water within 100 miles. These two walked by in full skin-diving out-fits.
We tried to give them the look of the norm. Next thing we knew, they both walked off the trail towards a large rock. I couldn't believe my eyes, when they hit the rocks, they weren't hurt. almost instantly they entered and flat-out vanished.
This didn't last long, as my friend's curiosity over-took his fear. He decided to go into the rock. I tried to warn him! It was to late, as he to vanished. Then almost before I knew it, a cloudy mist opening appeared to lure me in, so I thought.
I was wrong, and just saw a strange skin structure of a hand. This skin wasn't of this world. I still thought I should have went over and grabbed this hand later. This dream left me dwelling while awake.
This other world my friend entered, probably disagreed with his chemistry. That strange skin, that was worse looking than all the bad acne cases combined, may have been him. Looks can kill, or make you wish you were dead, when you fail to save a life because of odd looks.
I hope to dream these two dreams again. You can go back to a good meal, and finish it later, it's said. Dreaming to get back to that certain meal, may not be so easy, even if it's your favorite dish.
Conan's plane was doing circles, not of this world. I was ready to hit the ground as his plane was only a few feet above me. I'm sorry to say, I woke up. I'm dying to die, in at least one dream.

g. Fear Thief id Dreams
Fear - The Thief Of Dreams
"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear."
H.P. Lovecraft
See Files on Fear Psycilogy
Fear is defined as an emotional response to an unknown or impending danger or as an expectation of evil. Fear can create feelings of apprehension, anxiety, alarm, dread, fright or terror. When you are in fear, you are scared of someone, something or a potential outcome.
We all experience fear at one point in time or another. Actually fear is a great way to keep us from hurting ourselves. Fear has a limiting effect on our behaviors and ourselves. Fear keeps us from putting our hand on the hot burner of the stove. It keeps us from jumping from high place, or leaves us tentative when going into a darkened room. These types of fears are good. They keep us safe. They make us think before we do, knowing full well the potential outcome and repercussions of our actions. Even with activities such as fire walking, skydiving and bunji jumping, a major component or should I say thrill of these activities is saying hello to and overcoming fear.
Fear comes in all shapes and sizes. In extreme cases individuals find themselves afraid of closed in spaces such as elevators. They may be afraid of insects such as spiders or bees, they may be afraid of heights, afraid to fly in airplanes or even afraid of the water. Fear is elicited as a response or reaction to some previous life experience or trauma. It can be experienced when we look to venture into uncharted ground, especially when the outcome is unknown. We can also experience fear when we loose our jobs, look to end a relationship or even when we try to express our needs and desires.
Fear can impact us in many ways. It was once said "Fear is the thief of dreams". The truth to that statement is unbelievable. Bottom line … fear takes away our choices. It can keep us from doing the things we want or need to do for ourselves. It limits us, constrains us and can end up ruling our lives. It consumes our energy and enjoyment of life, leaving us experiencing additional unexplainable stress, frustration or feeling just plain stuck.
When it comes to health, the role emotions, especially the emotion of fear is not something to be taken lightly. Fear causes the body to contract. Fear causes our life force energy, or chi', that flows through our bodies to slow down creating distortions in its flow. The impact or sizes of these energetic distortions are dictated by repetition, intensity and our reaction to the negative/fear causing factor. These energetic distortions can be likened to an imaginary button within ourselves. The impact or size of these distortions being equated to how many times or how hard the button(s) gets pushed, multiplied by our unique reaction to the event or situation. It is like finding out that you owe the IRS money. Some people take it in stride, with little to no reaction. In others, it may evoke an intense reaction - one that will be remembered for years.
As these energetic distortions grow, our life force energy slows down proportionately, until it finally stops.
Once stopped, disease is only a step away. When we are in fear, we are hesitant to take steps forward. Our minds are filled with thoughts of a traumatic experience, a negative outcome or the potential repercussions of our choices and decisions. We manifest these fears as procrastination, where we choose to do nothing. Sometimes we go into resistance, digging our heals in and holding on tightly to our current position or situation. Some of us go into denial about our fears, choosing to blame others or the situation for their choices. Others just avoid putting themselves into scary situations thus eliminating any possible threat.
Being in or living in fear is all about choices…you can choose to move forward, or you can choose to stand still marking time. Again, while some fears are good and essential for our basic survival, many of the ones we face daily have nothing to do with any real threat or danger. For many of us, the only real peril we experience are the thoughts and ideas we conger up in our minds.
Fear can be thought of as a scary old-time black and white movie poster of the Werewolf or Dracula hanging on the back of a door in a darkened room. As we look ahead, the only thing we can see is this scary creature obstructing our passage and forward movement. What we don't realize is that the threat isn't real. Once we turn on the lights in the room, we can see that it is only a poster and no danger at all.
What's more, as we sit in this darkened room, unable or unwilling to either turn on the lights or step through that door, we will never know what is on the other side. We will be forever trapped by our own reservations, worries and uncertainties and will never come to know the freedom and sense of power that is experienced as you step through its limitation and into the light of a new day. Addressing fear, saying hello to it, is a major component in overcoming it. It is like turning on the light in that darkened room, the unknowns become known, what was once scary becomes mundane and may even seem trivial.
Miraculous things happen to those who consciously choose to overcome their fears. As they begin to move forward in this new life journey, many find deep, long lost, feelings of inner strength and renewed self-confidence. They gain certainty in their skills, abilities and even downfalls. They have the good fortune of learning more about themselves, their wants, needs and desires, thus opening new doors of opportunity and enjoyment.
What do you fear? Perhaps it is time to turn on the light and step through the door of empowerment and behold a new and brilliant day.

f. Real and Dream World Cinnections
Dreams: Links between real and imaginary worlds?
Dreams vary person to person. The true subconscious nature of the person is said to reflect in his dreams. His unfulfilled desires, wishes and longings that he craves for are fulfilled in his dreams. But is there more? Do dreams act as a communication pathway between the real and imaginary worlds where we are given messages that can’t be given in our conscious state?
Dreams: Links between real and imaginary worlds?
As many of us have experienced, dreams appear to be arbitrary reflections of memory and abrupt creation of the agility of the mind. We can hardly find any truth and logical basis or purpose in the broken sequence of what we usually dream in the sleep. Interestingly though, when we are watching a dream, every scene we see seems real. We experience every bit of it as though we are living through it.
Many times dreams appear to be quite amusing and entertaining. But quite often they are frightening nightmares too. The imaginary world of dreams may sometimes be supernatural and soothing fairylike dreamland. Some dreams are scary and stress our mind with unprecedented fear and worries. Usually these diversified experiences occur because of the influence of the semi-conscious state of the mind. Desires, apprehensions, and inquisitions of the conscious (external) mind, and the perceptions and conditioning of the sense organs induce corresponding influences in the subconscious state of sleep. For example, concupiscence at the time of sleep would generally result in vulgar scenes of sexual indulgence in the dreams. Active dreams of this kind might even stimulate the genitals and cause night discharge. The heaviness of stomach, indigestion, headache, anger, mental stress, tension etc. also bear associated negative effects on dreams. Bites of mosquitoes, bedbugs, etc may be depicted in the dreams as the injuries, pains, irritation, etc. unfulfilled desires, suppressed emotions and psychosomatic complexes, are also reflected in the variegated experiences of dreams, which would normally be beyond the imaginations of the conscious mind.
Most of the above kinds of the active (subconscious) dreams are hazy, haphazard and difficult to be remembered. Often the dreams of this category do not bear any meaning or purpose. Such dreams cannot be analyzed or interpreted scientifically and these hardly have any connection with the hidden messages of the unconscious mind. However, frequent occurrence of the dreams of similar kinds may have roots in some psychosomatic disorder or disease. Analysis of whatever is remembered from repeated experiences of some sort of dream during sleep might be useful in diagnosis and cure in such cases.
Correlation of mental tendencies and response of active dreams sometimes becomes apparent from the specific reactions of the semi conscious mind during active sleep. For instance, look at the following experiments conducted in the Dream Research division of California University.
As part of the studies of the effects of the surrounding environment on dreams, a candle was lit and kept for some time in front of the closed eyes of a sleeping person, who happened to be a sportsman. The latter felt in his dream at that moment that a white bat and a golden shining ball are kept in front of him which he is about to pick up and play. When the same experiment was repeated in front of a coward clerk, he dreamt that an enemy was coming towards him with a thick stick and a lamp in his hands to beat him up in the darkness of the night.
Napolean klettman and Eugene Aserensky of the Chicago University had attempted to investigate and identify the part or the state of the body or brain responsible for experience of dreams. Despite long term dedicated research they could not find any clue to proceed any further. Their unperturbed motivation however brought fruits one day when they saw rapid movement of the eyeballs and variation in the face expressions of a sleeping child. This observation gave rise to rather focused hypothesis that the rapid movement of the eyeballs makes watching a dream possible. This had set the direction of modern research on dreams, which has come a long way since.
Dreams appear to be the mode of transmitting subtle messages of the mind through a rhetorically coded language. Whatever one sees in a dream is a reflection of the subconscious or the unconscious mind. The active dreams of the kind illustrated above are the expressions of the thoughts, sentimental currents and bodily functions in general. The implicit nature of these reflections mingled with multiple flashes of memory makes it almost impossible to decode the meanings of dreams in general. Most often there may not be anything substantial in a dream. The extrovert ambitions and agile mind of people frequently present them with abrupt dreams no better than a child’s play or conjugation of delusions and arbitrary imaginations.
Stationary dreams and dreams with intuitive messages are rare and are experienced by people whose mind is pure, serene, and stable. Dreams of spiritually enlightened minds carry predomination, afflatus, or messages of great importance. Some people are born with spiritually charged mind because of their dedicated spiritual endeavors in the past lives. Some develop these by disciplined control and purification of their mind and character.
Spiritual dreams are expressions of afflatus and the sublimal voice of the inner self. Ample examples are available in the annals of history where great discoveries, divine illumination of the intellect, emergence of intuitive ideas, resolution of mysteries, realization of latent powers, etc amazingly became possible because of dreams. Sometimes, the divine inspirations educed by such dreams lead to sublime transformation of ordinary mortal beings into saints, mahatmas or great personalities of supernatural talent.
Young prince Siddharth once dreamt that a divine soul had taken him to a graveyard. Pointing to a dead body, the later warned-"Look, this is your body. Realize the perishable nature of the body and transient nature of life and hence make the best use of the moments of life available to you now" Siddharth was truly awakened by this dream. He renounced all luxuries and attachment and attained ultimate knowledge thereafter through ascetic disciplines and sadhana of the highest order. Thus, a dream sparked the transmutation of Siddharth into The Buddha.
The modern trends of psychology were largely inspired by the theory of Freud. Sigmund Freud neglected the role of dreams as possible linkage between the sublimal and the gross domains of consciousness. He rather affirmed dreams as reactions of suppressed and unfulfilled desires. In his view unsatisfied concupiscence or sexual instincts are predominant in stimulating disturbance of mind and generating psychological tides, which are expressed via dreams. Despite receiving significant support for a long time, Freud’s hypothesis was criticized and proven to be incomplete by eminent thinkers and psychologists like Carl Gustav Jung.
Jung opined that, although the aspirations, emotions and the reactions of the ups and downs of daily life bear substantial impact on dreams, the latter couldn’t be confined to such reflections alone. He defines dreams as expressions of the "communications" of the individual consciousness with one or more of the infinitely many impulses of the cosmic consciousness. In his view, decipheration of dreams may give us some, though indirect, idea of the linkage of the individual consciousness with the omnipresent Para-consciousness.
The red-rock gold mines are second largest in the world. Mr. Winfield S. Stratton, the founder and owner of this estate has described in his memoirs- how a miraculous dream made his fortune. It happened when Stratton was facing bankruptcy in his business and used to rove around in search of solace and hope. During his phase of misery, he slept under the sky on an open ground in Colorado on 4th July 1811. An angel appeared in his dream and showed him the path to climb the mountains of Betil. The angel marked a particular spot there and uttered- "here lies a great source of gold, which will enrich your fortunes for ages." Stratton was awake the next morning with a feeling of hope and surprise. As he did not have the money to invest in the new venture, Stratton narrated his dream to some friends with a request for help. They laughed and ridiculed his dream as mere delusion of his desperate mind. Their conclusions were logical because the geological survey of that region of Colorado, conducted about 18 years back, had shown no possibilities of any valuable mineral ore there. All doors were closed for poor Stratton but his hopes and enthusiasm remained alive.
A few days passed. Finally he climbed the hills as per the directions shown in the dream and also identified the right spot. He dug out some portion and found a stone of gold at a depth of few feet. Then he borrowed some money against the surety of his remaining property and purchased that ‘golden land’ of Colorado. Soon he became a billionaire.
Stratton considered the dream as a blessing of the Almighty as a reward for his pious deeds in a past life. As a mark of his inexplicable gratitude, he established a church on the grounds where he saw the divine dream. He also founded a charitable trust for free education of poor and helpless children.
So it is seen that if we maintain sincerity, piety and natural peace of mind and thus, minimize the hindrances in the expression of its unconscious impulses, we too may sometime be bestowed with the miraculous knowledge and experience in dreams that we could have never imagined to attain in our wildest dreams. The source of all knowledge, all activities and manifestations of the visible world-as we experience it, lie in the subtle, unseen world, which is beyond the reach of our perception. The gross body of the tree is seen but its roots lie beneath the surface of the earth. The strength, greenery and fructification of the tree depend upon how strong and deep are its roots. The same may be true of the trees of our lives, too.

e. Sex Dreams
Sex Dreams
Dreams…. All that you ever wanted to do, without anyone else’s knowledge you can do it here! Literally!
If there is anything we’ve had an excess of is this factor of sex dreams! The very thought may entice you to get into a trance that is limitless! And I bet you that no amount of pictures or steamy films may perhaps give you any more ideas that have already grown in your mind! There are perhaps the largest number of examples whilst in dreams than there are while waking up and indulging in the actual act!
Sex researchers (if there are any such in their clan!) have observed that a majority of couples actually shun getting into the act because their dreams of lovemaking are so perfect that it is almost shameful when you are bogged down by reality. They fail to understand that almost all kinds of pornography has just one basis, that of perfection. You’d probably never come across babes and hunks of that size and caliber with the inexhaustible energy to bounce back into action at the press of a button (well! It’s more or less the case!) The guy just has this insatiable energy to pump his lady and the lady on the other hand also has this unlimited power of suckling everything that she lays her hands on! Strange! Then there are those that every human dreams of; his ex-crush. Not that it’s a really mean thing to fantasize about, but then everything in moderation has it’s own charm.
For instance an over dose of the dream of your crush may either strangely get yourself involved in the act or even get you away from your current lover. Research proves that men have more of these sex dreams than women. (I can’t help but mention that I am not surprised!) Men are known to be the negative sign, the one who gives, so unless he really has a strong control of what he intends to give, pain or pleasure that is, he will still remain the negative sign! Women on the other hand are at the receiving end! (Aren’t they always!)
They are the positive sign that take in everything, love, pain, insults, back stabs, embrace, and of course sex! So generally speaking, women don’t have to spend in sleepless nights over a man, men on the other hand need to be trained in keeping pace with their libido. Of course this is how the general woman reacts to sex, and of course there are exceptions to the rule, especially so if she tends to be born under the sign of Taurus! And because this is so, men have to "control" their desires, resulting in them experiencing more dreams than women would!
Recording these Dreams
Lab results prove that since men have more of these dreams, they also have numerous erections. And if you’re a daydreamer, then God help you! Men tend to experience more signs of being sexually prepared than women are. For them even the slightest signal, could get their testosterone rolling! Men generally don’t dream about the act itself, it’s a package deal. Most of them don’t even remember what they have dreamt about! On enquiring about their dreams, most men have reported mentioning about either a scene where a couple was involved in passionate night games or rather about other men.
Although not all of them were homosexuals, a majority of the dream content included them being seduced by women or lashed by them. Two extreme notion were recorded in many parts of the world, where most men confessed that their erections were merely a part of the activity that was to follow. On them questioning themselves, most of them had themselves explaining the entire dream sequence rather than the actual part of pumping pleasure!
Women on the other hand had let loose all their sexual fantasies in their dreams. These also included all those they probably found to be great sex material, throughout their entire day, be it the office, the super market or even on the road! While most dreams included a long foreplay, it ended rather peacefully too, only defining their dreams to be like them feminine!

d. Power of Dreams
Harness the power of your dreams
Harness the power of your dreams

"If you can imagine it,
You can achieve it.
If you can dream it,
You can become it."
-William Arthur Ward
William Arthur Ward's quote should be a powerful call to action. Dreams have tremendous power. They sustain us through desperate times and drive us through difficult ones and give us hope for the future. More important-they inspire us!
Where would human beings be without dreams? Would we have explored distant places or invented the means to travel to those destinations? How many children are alive today thanks to the dreams of doctors and scientists? What works of art lift the hearts of countless masses due to the dreams of artists?
In the end so much is possible thanks to the power of dreams and yet so many people seem unwilling to free their own dreams. They shrug them off, ignore them, or reject them entirely-too difficult, impossible, ridiculous, meaningless.
But even the most frivolous dreams have meaning. If one person's life is touched by that dream-whether they are inspired, changed, or simply lightened-then that dream has power and meaning.
It is sad that in our society to be called a "dreamer" is actually an insult. In many societies, to be a dreamer was once a high calling. If we think of all that dreams have caused-from space travel to the creation of the United States of America to a polio vaccine-perhaps we can make dreaming acceptable again.
What do you do with your own dreams? Do you dare to voice them, dare to do something about them? Or do you instead spend your time finding excuses for why your dreams are impossible?
No dream is impossible! You have to believe that and you have to dare to dream, or your dream will be impossible, but there is no one to blame but yourself because you never let it become possible. Perhaps that is why so many perceive being a "dreamer" as something negative, because they view it as a passive exercise, but being a true "dreamer" is anything but passive-it requires action!
Yes, it is scary to dream, it is scary to take a leap of faith, to risk yourself. Even more frightening than failure is the knowledge that once you take that risk you will have lost your dream forever.
But do not be afraid, you can succeed, but even if THIS dream does fail, once you've become someone that dares to dream there will be others. Once you've made that change, once you've become a dreamer, there is no going back--and that is certainly a step on the road to success!
So, remember to Dare to Dream!

b. Sleeping Too Much
Causes of Sleeping Too Much
If you want to know the causes of your sleeping too much, read this article and know that it is a complex and intricate problem which at times might need medicinal help.
Causes of Sleeping Too Much
A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book. ~Irish Proverb Yes sleep is considered to be a blissful thing that rejuvenates us from all day’s stress and strain. If you do not get enough sleep you will feel tired the whole day and some people cannot even sleep during the to compensate for the sleepless night. Sleep has powers to revitalize human body but if there is too less or too much sleep, your body would not respond positively to this phenomenon. Yes today we would discuss about the causes of sleeping "too much" which is also a kind of sleep disorder.
Causes of Oversleeping
There are several causes as to why a person sleeps too much but some of the common causes are stress, lack of self-discipline and poor sleep in some of the previous days. These are some of the temporary causes that can be got rid of with a little will power and determination or probably with the change of phase but there are some causes, which are to be dealt with clinically and are not as simple as the previous ones. Lets discuss some of these causes in details.
* Sleep Apnea- Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder, which is more about trouble to breathe, which results in frequent disturbances in long and deep sleep, thus leaves the person tired and slow even if he has slept for 10 hours. It is a severe problem when people start falling asleep while driving and at work. The worst part of the disease that most of the people who have Sleep Apnea do not even know that they are suffering due to such conditions because they do not remember getting up in the night gasping for breath so they do not take any actions to stop it from happening. The breathing trouble happens so that the muscles of the walls of the throat tend to relax as the individual starts relaxing and as result of which the air flow inside the body stops and either the individual gets up to breathe or he or she fails to go to a deep level of sleep which actually regenerates and freshens our mind and body. Some of the symptoms of this kind of disease are dozing off to sleep irrespective of the place, heavy snoring and headaches in the morning. Mostly reducing the weight can treat this disorder.
* Narcolepsy-Unlike Sleep Apnea Narcolepsy is a neurological, problem that leads to over sleeping. This neurological problem hits that part of the brain, which controls and regulates sleep. People who have narcolepsy fail to identify and distinguish between the times to sleep and the times to remain awake. Such people can fall asleep anywhere and anytime. It is often considered to be hereditary disease and it actually changes the lifestyle of a person and clinical help is a must in case of Narcolepsy. A patient of Narcolepsy might fall asleep for seconds or even for an hour but when these patients get up they feel refreshed and energetic but this condition does not prevail for long. They start feeling sleepy again. It is a hereditary disease but then there are environmental problems also that play a major role. It is said that people who suffer from Narcolepsy lack in the protein called Hypocretin, which actually regulates the inclinations to fall asleep.

Signs of Sleep Apnea that you Should Know
Providing information on sleeping problems/sleep apnea, causes and treatments, signs of sleep apnea, serious sleeping disorder
An individual may have family members or themselves who are suffering from sleep apnea, but to them it is just snoring. This is because you do not know the signs of sleep apnea. Here in this article we are going to give they valuable information on the signs of sleep apnea that they should know.
What is sleep apnea?
It is not only about snoring, it is more serious than that. It is a type of serious sleeping disorder, where when they are sleeping they will suffer from irregular breathing. This irregular breathing is not going to happen once but it will be accompanied by irregular pause. Each discontinuance in breathing may last for 10 to 20 seconds and it may occur more than 30 times in an hour. Yes, you stop breathing for that long, don't you think it is very scary for others to witness. Of course not you, because you won't realize it, just that it wakes you up, and you continue sleeping. There are usually two types – one is obstructive sleep apnea and the other one is central sleep apnea. If you are suffering from it, your breathing will either stopped or reduced significantly. In other words, this is one of the most common signs of sleep apnea, where it is noticeable when your breathing is stopped for 10 seconds or more than that. Most people know this sign, but here we would like to discuss the other signs of sleep apnea in depth.
Other Signs of Sleep Apnea:
Oxygen Level Will Drop
As mentioned earlier, the sufferer will experience an absolute discontinuance of airflow or significant reduction in their breathing. When the breathing stops it causes a decrease of at least a 4% oxygen saturation level within blood. This occurs as a direct result of reduction in the rate of transferring oxygen through the blood at the time breathing halts. This is one of the most prominent signs.
Sleep Will Be Disturbed
When sleep apnea happens, one's sleep is seriously disrupted. Sometimes, due to the severity of breathing cessation, the individual having the problem will stay wake fully. On the other hand, it may also be possible that the individual may come out from a deep and sound sleep, and later enter into a more small level of sleep. This is one of the most common signs of sleep apnea, and that is why it is calculated during sleep.
Suffer from Dry Throat and Morning Headache
These are other usual signs of sleep apnea. In the morning when the individual wakes up, they usually have a remarkably dry throat. Dry throat makes the individual feel uncomfortable and experiences a prolonged hardness in breathing. In addition to dry throat, they may fell tired not only from lack of sleep but also suffering from morning headache. Therefore they are not going to have a great day.
Experience Weariness and Daytime Sleepiness
Since they are suffering from a sleeping disorder pattern where they are incapable of having a deep, soothing sleep, they commonly suffer from immense weariness and feel sleepy during the day. Their sleep is habitually followed by loud snoring along with snorting sounds particularly during late night.
Insufficient Supply of Oxygen
One of the most typical signs of sleep apnea includes a sharp drop in the oxygen level, which poses a serious threat to cardiovascular system. This is because the cardiovascular system has to work harder in order to supply enough quantity of oxygen to all tissues. This indirectly cause the development of high blood pressure, ultimately increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke. Once the signs of sleep apnea is known, it will be easier for the individuals to seek treatment sooner.

a.Sleep
mportance of sleeping in human life
Half of our life we spend sleeping and we really don’t bother to even think on it. We rarely think what actually happens with our body. Sleep is nothing but the way to rest our body, during which we are relieved from tension and the consciousness of world is suspended. It is a natural process and occurs after specific interval by default. While in sleep we have lessened movement of the skeletal muscles and slowed-down metabolism.
Stages of sleep:
Basically there are five different stages of sleep. At start as we go to the bed we enter the first stage of sleep. Initially for about 5 to 10 minutes until we go to sleep we do keep turning on the bed. We are more cautious and can be awakened easily. Our eyes blink very slowly and muscle activity slows down. In next stage we become disengaged with the environment, breathing and heart rate are regular and body temperature goes down. While in 3rd and 4th stages of sleep we go into deep sleep and it is very difficult to wake someone during this period. The body activities slow down; breathing becomes slower and relaxed; energy regained; and hormones are released for growth and development. People who get awakened during deep sleep do not adjust immediately and often feel groggy and disoriented for several minutes after they wake up.
Sleeping is it waste of time?
No actually is just like an investment one makes in buying property. It will pay off definitely. Good sleep is required since it gives good health, mental and emotional functioning and safety. So we must find out time from our daily busy schedule give rest to our working brain. Brain also requires rest it starts to give up after long working hours. People who don’t get proper sleep and feel it as waste of time, most of them get on with chronic insomnia. They are more likely than others to develop several kinds of psychiatric problems, and health problems.
Amount of sleep:
The amount of sleep each person needs depends on many factors, including age. If we don’t feel sleepy through out the day means we got enough sleep. Scientifically small babies require more sleep around 15-16 hours. The young people sleep for 8-9 hours and the adults require 7-8 hours sleep. However it’s much dependent on that particular individual’s body requirement also. While some feel comfortable with say 8 hrs of sleep another person may require 9hrs also.
For most people who have to travel different time zones should try to follow the day night sleep according to that country’s clock which they are going to visit. This prepares body for change in schedule of daily routine.
Factors affecting sleep at night:
1) Environment: A distracting sleep environment such as a room that's too hot or cold, too noisy or too brightly lit can be a barrier to sound sleep. And interruptions from children or other family members can also disrupt sleep. Other influences to pay attention to are the comfort and size of your bed and the habits of your sleep partner. If you have to lie beside someone who has different sleep preferences, snores, can't fall or stay asleep, or has other sleep difficulties, it often becomes your problem too. So be sure that the there are no such disturbances.
2) Illness: A number of physical problems can interfere with your ability to fall or stay asleep. The pain of backache, stomachache can cause problems. So consult doctor for medicines in such case.
3) Mental Condition:If we have stress in our mind before going to bed it will cause hurdle in sleep. So forget your burden by watching light comedy movie or some books. This will help to reduce tension.
Risk associated with poor sleep
Sleep deprivation can be dangerous. Not getting enough sleep makes feel irritable, lose patience and to get angry while driving. Most of the accidents that occur across globe are due to improper sleep. Feeling sleepy during the daytime reduces the efficiency at work. This results in loss of millions of rupees around the world. Studies show that lack of sleep leads to problems completing a task, concentrating, making decisions and unsafe actions. Recent research suggests that sleep deprivation impacts on aging and diabetes.
Sleep related diseases:
Insomnia, Circadian Rhythm Disorders, sleep apnea, sleeps walking and sleep attacks are some of the diseases related to sleeping. All these can be avoided if we follow regular sleep patterns, do regular exercise meditation and yoga practice.
It’s often seen that worker people enjoy the pleasure of having good sleep. This is because the amount of work they do and have fixed daily routine. Sleep cannot be purchased and even many rich people bend their knees in front of it. So follow proper schedule and find enough time that you can have for proper sleep.

2. It Came to Me in a Dream
It Came To Me In A Dream
Solve problems while sleeping and get the solutions in a dream. Here's how.
It came to me in a dream. I was explaining the "add-subtract-change" problem solving technique to somebody. I had never heard of it before, but while awake I had been working on a book about problem solving. This new technique turned out to be a very useful technique when I tried it. It is an idea that has undoubtedly been thought of by others, but it was unknown to me until that moment.
I have had this happen before. I have had story ideas come to me in a dream, and solutions to problems. When I was younger, I even invented a way to sail my sled on the Lake Michigan ice in my dream. I tried it and it worked.
Maybe you have solved problems and had new ideas in your dreams as well. There is no doubt that it can happen, but how do we make it more likely, and more common? Try the following.
Getting Ideas In A Dream
- Think about it a lot. If a period of intense mental work on a problem precedes sleep, the subconscious mind has been "instructed" that this is important, and will continue to work on the problem during sleep.
- Write the problem down, and what qualities the solution may have, just before going to sleep.
- Practice with simple problems. See if you can get yourself to imagine a new kind of furniture, or a new poem in a dream.
- Keep paper and pen by the side of the bed. Write down any ideas you have when you wake up. The process encourages your mind to have even more ideas. A tape recorder is even better, because you can use it without a light and quickly go back to sleep.
- If you wake up without an alarm, you are more likely to remember your dreams. If you need an alarm for work, try problem solving in dreams over the weekend.
- As soon as you wake up, quickly review any dreams you can recall. This "sets" them in your mind before you can forget them. Then you can think back on them later, to see if there is anything useful there.
- If you don't need sound sleep, try sleeping on the floor or in another slightly uncomfortable way. The repeated waking up and going back to sleep gives you more opportunities to remember dreams. I took notes on nine dreams one night in this way, and had two good ideas from them.
You can get good ideas in a dream. You can also have good ideas and solutions to problems come to you the next morning after you wake up. Review the problem mentally in the morning to encourage this latter process.
Are these scientifically "proven" techniques. No. Try to measure the "value" of an idea scientifically. Try to say what counts as an idea, in order to see if the frequency increases when using these little tricks. Scientific proof in this area is difficult for now, but people have had productive dreams for thousands of years, and there is nothing harmful in trying to find an answer in a dream. Why not give it a try?

Sleep - 1/3 Life
Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleave of care,
The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath,
Balm of hurt minds, great Nature's second course,
Chief nourisher in life's feast.
- Shakespeare
Sleep! It is everyone's wish for the day but not forever. We spend our one third of life in sleeping. Why do you want it? It is difficult to explain it. Similarly it is difficult to define it. You cannot know the happenings going on within as well as around during sleep. Very general answer: it is one of my daily activities such as eating; drinking and so I perform it so as others.
Next question arises is what leads you to sleep? Is it brain that orders you to sleep? G Kaitholli argues: "Sleep will come to you when you are ready to accept it."
Why do I sleep?
This is a stupid but genuine question.
Robert McCarley believes that people get sleep for two reasons.
1. You've been awake for a long time, and the other is, it's that time of day or night to go to sleep.
2. Kind of sleep is related to your body rhythms, circadian rhythms; and melatonin acts on circadian rhythm, it's really a darkness hormone.
In point of views of B. Mallick "Sleep is a reversible behavioral state of disengagement from and unresponsiveness to the surrounding environment."
Awake or sleeping?
How do you know whether one is awake or sleeping?
1. You are awake when you show external signs of wakefulness such as walking or talking. But you cannot differentiate sleeping person and man lying quietly.
2. You may disrupt by your external factors like light, noise, or internal factors such as your dream, pain, emotions and stress.
3. Whatever you feel, during your sleep is nothing else but it just your dream. By your dream one measure the level or the state of your sleep.
Sleep is builder of health!
According to Irish Proversh "Sleep is the beginning of the health". It is just not rest to your mind but it makes your heart healthy too.
Psychiatrist Michael Irwin wrote "Sleep is key to a healthy heart, when people drift off levels of hormones which stimulate the sympathetic nervous system during the waking hours begin to ebb. Its result: blood pressure falls. Heart rate slows. Your heart get much deserved rest because it making blood to flow."
Sleepless Nights!
Study happened at National Cancer Center, Tokyo defines that 'People who sleep less than 5 hours a night run 2-3 times the risk of heart attacks."
We fall asleep when we are physically and mentally exhausted, in a process that is as involuntary as breathing or digestion. Sometimes Stresses and strains are of modern life affecting the ability to sleep comfortably and refreshingly.
Excitement, fear, sorrow and guilt are frequent barriers to sleep.
Sleeplessness has been running in hand-in-glove with nervous breakdowns, high blood pressure and even mental upsets. - Battista.
Too much!
James Allen criticized sleeping habit " Enough sleep should be taken, but not too much."
Carol Everson found "When rats sleep deprived over a three-week period, bacteria that normally reside in the gut be gain to spread to organ and the bloodstream, making the animals ill. For human being experts' advice is to aim for seven to nine hours a night."
Joyce Walsleben, PhD, Director, NYU Sleep Disorder Clinic says, "Well my patients tell me that excessive sleepiness feels like they can't maintain their alertness, they'll describe it perhaps as fatigue or the inability to concentrate or the sense that they're missing something or they have no energy."
Too much sleep makes a man dull and lethargic.
Balanced Life
If you want to sleep without any problem and you want to enjoy your night sleep you must have to follow some basic rules.
1. Sleep early and get up early in the morning. Always decide to see sunrise before sleep.
2. Be regular in your activities. You don't have any particular base of your activities than prepare a time she dual for your daily activity of sleep.
3. Have exercise everyday; be regular in some sort of physical exercise. Warm bath may also help to get a better sleep.
4. Take some food or drink milk before sleep.
5. Never take alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
6. Make your bedroom dark and create a safe and comfortable place to sleep.
7. Read some magazines or book, watching TV programs (not too much!) before sleep because it will help you to sleep early.
8. Make your body light than air.
9. Have a glass of milk before sleep. Take light food in dinner.
10. Don't think just go to bed for sleep.
11. Think of dreaming beauty you like. (Anything that makes you happy)
12. And finally, if I sleep, I sleep for myself.

Sleep Dreaming
Solve Problems in Your Sleep with Lucid Dreaming
Wouldn’t it be great to use your sleep time to come up with creative solutions to a problem? Lucid dreaming gives you that opportunity by allowing you to control your dreams, directing them in any way you want to solve your problems.

Lucid dreaming is dreaming while being aware that you are dreaming. The idea is that once you are aware you are dreaming you can alter your dreams and control what happens. Once perfected, it allows you to control the direction of your dreams. This is an enticing prospect for creative problem solving since when dreaming, you are restricted only by your imagination, not by the "realities’ of physical constraints or social customs. Imagine being able to develop new ideas, chat with Einstein, or get golf tips from Tiger Woods.
Can you learn to have lucid dreams?
Lucid dreaming is like any other skill—some people are naturally better at it than others but most can learn how to do it. To learn how, it’s important to first know a bit about the stages of sleep.
Our sleep patterns follow a repeating cycle that involves different levels of sleep having different brainwave activity. Each cycle lasts about 90 to 100 minutes so a person will typically experience 4 to 5 complete sleep cycles a night. The stages of this cycle involve four levels of Slow-Wave or Non-REM sleep followed by REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep as shown below:
Level / Brainwave Type / Brainwave Frequency
1 / Alpha/Theta / 4 to 8
2 / Theta / 8 to 15
3 / Delta/Theta / 2 to 4
4 / Delta/Theta / 0.5 to 2
5 (REM) / Beta / > 12
Although some dreaming occurs during the other stages of sleep, the most vivid dreaming occurs during the REM stage. During this time, the higher frequency beta waves keep the mind active. As its name suggests, REM sleep is characterized by frequent bursts of rapid eye movement, along with occasional muscular twitches. The first REM period occurs about 90 minutes after falling asleep and lasts about 10 minutes. This REM period increases in subsequent sleep cycles during the night.
How do you start?
One of the first requirements for having lucid dreams is to be able to recall your dreams. This can be done with a little practice. A good method is to focus your intent on remembering your dreams. Before falling asleep, repeat to yourself over and over, "I will awake from my dreams and completely remember them." If your thoughts wander, try to come back to this affirmation so that it is your last thought before drifting off to sleep. Another good technique is to keep a dream journal to record your dreams upon waking. Whenever you awake, immediately attempt to focus on what you had just been dreaming and write it down on a writing pad. Try to capture all the key points, such as what you were doing, where you were, and who was around you. Also, note anything strange such as things that wouldn’t normally happen in the waking world. If you find these strange events recur in your dreams, then they are your personal dream signs which you can use to recognize when you are dreaming.
Inducing lucid dreams
Lucid dreaming is usually induced by some sort of cue—something that indicates to the person that what they are experiencing is a dream, and not reality. These cues are often referred to as dream signs. Dream signs are usually things or events that would be impossible or very unusual in the waking world. Some examples of dream signs are breathing under water, flying, light switches that don’t work, suddenly returning to work at an old job, or being naked. Whenever a dream sign occurs in your dream, stop and ask yourself whether or not it is possible. If the answer is no, you are dreaming! With practice you can learn to recognize when you are dreaming by looking for these cues and doing a "reality check".
Once you have "caught" yourself dreaming, you can start to control your dream. Try changing the scene or situation, or controlling your own actions. In order to be successful at controlling your dreams, you should believe that what you are trying to do is possible. So it’s important to remember that you are in control and anything you want is possible. Start with some small things and gradually work up to more challenging activities.
A good resource in this area is Dr. Stephen LaBerge's book Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming which is based on his extensive laboratory work at Stanford University. However, if you really want to speed up the learning process, there are audio CDs available that enable you to experience lucid dreaming in just days. One program that has had good reviews is Bradley Thompson’s The Lucid Dreaming Kit. The kit includes an Audio Stimulation CD that you play as you go to sleep which incorporates special beats and prompts to help you become lucid when dreaming.
Using Lucid Dreaming for Creative Problem Solving
Although lucid dreaming can be used for many applications, one of the most intriguing is to solve problems in your sleep. Lucid dreaming is a powerful tool that taps into your brain’s most creative state without the normal sensory distractions that disturb our focus during waking hours. Lucid dream offers the potential for truly creative thinking.
